How this works, and its limits
Where does the data come from?
YouGov's Westminster MRP model, published 24 Sept 2026 — fieldwork 23 Aug–18 Sept 2026, 16,758 respondents, independent (commissioned by YouGov itself, not any party).
Read the write-up · Full seat-by-seat data (CSV), which gives a central estimate plus a low and a high estimate for every party in every constituency. This site calls the span between the low and high estimates the "range". YouGov doesn't state what level of confidence these low and high estimates represent.
How willing are voters to vote tactically?
YouGov, 23 Sept 2026 — "What is the tactical voting landscape in September 2026?". In a Labour-vs-Reform head-to-head, Labour 41%, Reform 26%. In a Conservative-vs-Reform head-to-head, Conservatives 35%, Reform 20%.
Which party is recommended?
In each constituency, the recommendation is whichever of Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Green, Plaid Cymru or SNP has the highest central estimate in YouGov's data. Reform UK and Restore Britain are never recommended.
YouGov reports all other parties and candidates, including independents, as a single "Others" figure, so they can't be recommended individually. Where Others are estimated at 20% or more, the result says so, and it's worth checking who is standing locally.
What do the labels mean?
- Close: Reform's range and the best-placed alternative's range overlap (396 constituencies).
In other words, the trailing party's high estimate is at least as high as the leading party's low estimate. The ranges are YouGov's published low and high estimates, used exactly as published, and the test works the same way whichever party is ahead.
Example — close: Broxtowe. Labour 30% (range 23–38%), Reform 24% (range 18–30%). Reform's high estimate (30%) is above Labour's low estimate (23%), so the ranges overlap.
Example — close: Great Yarmouth. Reform 32% (range 20–43%), Conservative 18% (range 12–24%). The Conservative high estimate (24%) is above Reform's low estimate (20%), so the ranges overlap, even though the central estimates are 14 points apart.
Example — not close: Ashfield. Reform 49% (range 37–60%), Labour 18% (range 11–24%). Labour's high estimate (24%) is below Reform's low estimate (37%), so the ranges don't overlap.
- Reform well ahead: Reform's central estimate is ahead and the ranges don't overlap (5 constituencies). The best-placed challenger is still named, and voting for the party you genuinely prefer is also a reasonable choice.
- Safe from Reform: the best-placed alternative's central estimate is ahead and the ranges don't overlap (231 constituencies). No tactical vote is needed.
The gap is the difference in points between the central estimates for Reform and the best-placed alternative, whichever is ahead.
